So I think it's safe to say, most of us are aware of how wasteful and polluting the fashion industry is and if you aren't, then now you know. I mean from the synthetic fabrics to the chemicals used to make the fabrics, from the dying to even importing them from overseas. It's a mess and if we're honest with ourselves most of us are playing a part in the mess at some level. As a fashion designer and seamstress, one of the most wasteful things I've noticed first hand is the amount of fabric that gets wasted within the whole constructing process. It's absolutely infuriating to witness. So much fabric goes to waste within the process of cutting out pattern pieces, as a result of having an overage of fabric but not limited to having a shortage, in which case a certain pattern piece may not fit, resulting in wasted fabric. Now of course, I know what your thinking... The smart, responsible and advisable thing to do would be to measure out your pattern pieces before you just go and guess how much fabric you would need, leaving you with too much or too little. However younger me decided to wing it and now years later I am still finding myself stuck with all the fabric I over estimated needing. With all of that being said, one of the ways to reduce waste is to turn that left over fabric into other creative masterpieces! My latest pieces are from extra fabric that I had from some of my past projects! The fabric from the black vest was left over fabric that I had from the black wool coat I made. The fabric from the tan and black satin vest were from trousers that I made and the satin was from my displacement mini collection. The fabric from the tribal printed and black satin blazer is also from my displacement mini collection, although I did have to get more black satin in order to finish the garment
